Bank shot
Also called: Bank, Double
How do you aim a bank shot in pool?
A bank shot sends the object ball off one or more cushions into a pocket. You aim using the mirror principle — angle in roughly equals angle out — then adjust for speed, cut and spin.
Step by step
- 1Find the object ball's mirror image across the target cushion.
- 2Aim the object ball at the cushion point lined up with the mirror pocket.
- 3Use medium speed and center ball for the first attempt.
- 4Adjust: if it came short, aim longer or hit softer next time.
In more detail
Banks hit firmly shorten; soft banks run closer to the mirror angle. Cutting the object ball onto the rail adds spin to it ('cut-induced english'), which also changes the rebound.

Is there a formula for bank shots?
The mirror method is the core formula. Diamond-based systems refine it, but speed and spin always require calibration.
