Pendulum stroke

What is a pendulum stroke in pool?

A pendulum stroke swings the forearm from a still elbow, like a pendulum. The tip moves in a slight arc, so it is level only near the bottom of the swing — which is why the cue ball should be struck where the forearm hangs vertical.

In more detail

The pendulum is the simplest stroke to repeat because only one joint moves. Toward the end of the follow-through the elbow may drop naturally; that is fine as long as it happens after contact.

Pendulum or piston stroke — which is better?

Both are used at the top level. The pendulum is easier to repeat; the piston (elbow drop) keeps the cue straighter for longer. Pick one and train it consistently.
