Ferrule
What is the ferrule on a pool cue?
The ferrule is the white collar between the tip and the wooden shaft. It protects the wood from splitting on impact and contributes to how much end mass the shaft has, which affects squirt.
In more detail
Shorter or lighter ferrules are a common feature of low-deflection shafts. The ferrule also helps you check tip position visually: a centered ferrule at address helps you see whether the tip is truly at center ball.
People also ask
Is it a foul to hit the ball with the ferrule?
Contact must be made with the tip. Hitting with the ferrule usually causes a miscue; under WPA rules a miscue is not automatically a foul unless another rule is broken, but it almost always ruins the shot.
