What is English in pool?
English is sidespin put on the cue ball by hitting it left or right of center. It changes the cue ball's angle off a cushion, but it also causes squirt, swerve and throw, so it changes your aim on the object ball too.
In more detail
Use english to change rebound angles off rails, not to pot balls. Many strong players use center ball (with draw or follow) for most shots and add english only when the angle demands it.
People also ask
Does english make the object ball spin?
Barely. The main effect on the object ball is throw — a small change in its direction — not transferred spin.
Should beginners use english?
Sparingly. Master speed and vertical spin first; english multiplies aiming variables.
