Cue tip

Also called: Tip, Leather tip

What does the tip on a pool cue do?

The cue tip is the leather pad on the end of the shaft that contacts the cue ball. It holds chalk and grips the ball for a split second, which is what lets you apply draw, follow and english without miscuing.

In more detail

Tips come soft, medium and hard. Soft tips grip more and feel muted but wear faster; hard tips last longer and feel crisp but can miscue sooner if not chalked. Keep the tip shaped to roughly a nickel or dime curvature and scuffed lightly so it holds chalk.

People also ask

How often should I chalk my cue?

Before practically every shot, especially any with spin. A missed chalk is the most common cause of miscues.
