Position play
Also called: Shape, Playing position
What is position play in pool?
Position play (shape) is pocketing a ball while sending the cue ball to the best spot for the next shot. Good position aims for a zone with a comfortable angle, not a precise point and not dead straight.
Step by step
- 1Decide the next ball and pocket before you shoot.
- 2Pick a position zone that leaves a small cut toward the following ball.
- 3Choose the simplest spin and speed that reach that zone.
- 4Check the cue ball path for kisses and scratch lines.
- 5Shoot, and note whether you missed long, short, left or right.
In more detail
Plan position three balls ahead: the shot now, the next shot, and the one after that. The best route keeps the cue ball moving through open areas, avoids crossing scratch lines and lands in large zones.
People also ask
Why is it bad to be straight in for position?
With no angle, the cue ball can only go forward or back, so it is hard to move to the next ball. A small angle lets you send it sideways.
