Cue-ball control
Also called: Position, Whitey control
What is cue ball control in pool?
Cue-ball control is the ability to decide where the cue ball goes after hitting the object ball, using speed, tip position (draw, follow, stun, english) and the tangent line. It is what turns single pots into runs.
Step by step
- 1Predict the cue ball's direction from the tangent line and the spin you choose.
- 2Pick a target zone, not a point — larger zones are easier to hit.
- 3Choose the speed needed to stop in that zone.
- 4Hit, then compare where it stopped with where you planned. Adjust next time.
In more detail
Three variables control the cue ball: speed, vertical spin and side spin. Of these, speed matters most — most position errors are distance errors, not direction errors. Learn speed with center ball first, then add spin.

How long does it take to learn cue ball control?
Basic stop, follow and draw can feel reliable after a few weeks of focused practice; precise position takes much longer. Measured drills shorten the curve.
