Rack
Also called: Triangle, Diamond rack, Racking
How do you rack in 8-ball and 9-ball?
A rack is the frame used to set the balls for the break — a triangle for 8-ball (15 balls) and a diamond for 9-ball (9 balls). 'Rack' also means a single game, as in 'he ran three racks'.
Step by step
- 18-ball: apex ball on the foot spot, 8-ball in the center of the third row, one solid and one stripe in the back corners.
- 29-ball: 1-ball on the foot spot, 9-ball in the middle of the diamond, other balls in random order.
- 3Push the balls forward and tap the back so every ball is frozen, then lift the rack straight up.
In more detail
A tight rack, with every ball frozen to its neighbours, transfers energy evenly and gives a bigger, more predictable spread. Gaps make the rack 'dead' and the break weaker. Many tournaments now use templates instead of racks for consistent tightness.
People also ask
Does a tight rack really matter?
Yes. A loose rack absorbs energy and produces clusters, making a run-out much harder.
