Reading the table
Also called: Table reading, Table plan
How do you read a pool table?
Reading the table means surveying the layout before shooting: which balls are open, which are problems, where the clusters are and what the best pattern is. It decides whether to run out or play safe.
In more detail
Walk around the table before your first shot in each inning. Look from the pocket side as well as the cue ball side, and identify your end pattern.
People also ask
How long should I spend reading the table?
Long enough to plan the first three shots and the end pattern. A short, consistent walk-around beats both rushing and over-thinking.
