30-Day Cue Ball Control

Four progressive weeks: measure your baseline, build repeatable speed, apply it to position play, then retest and choose your next priority.
Duration
4 weeks
Sessions
16 total
Per session
45 min
Level
Intermediate

What you'll train

  • A personal speed scale you can call before the shot
  • Smaller spread between your best and worst results
  • Cue-ball landing in defined zones after a pot
  • A measured before/after comparison

Built for players who

  • Potting the ball but leaving no next shot
  • Cue ball rolling too far or stopping short
  • Speed that changes under match pressure
  • Practice that feels busy but shows no measurable progress
Target skill
Cue-ball speed and direction control
Intended level
Intermediate (comfortable with basic stop, follow and draw)
Who it's for
League and club players who pot reasonably well but lose position on routine shots.
Objective
Replace guessed speed with repeatable, measured speed, then apply it to simple position patterns.

Equipment
Pool table (7, 8 or 9 ft), Cue ball and at least three object balls, Chalk or coins for zone markers, Your online practice log (or paper)

Week-by-week plan

Week 1 is open to everyone — start today. Academy Members get every week in full, with timed session blocks, checkpoints and the final retest.

  1. W1

    Baseline & speed fundamentals

Measure where you are today and establish a center-ball speed scale.

    • Session 1: Baseline test — Speed Ladder (2 sets) and Stop-Shot Ladder (2 sets). Record every score.
    • Session 2: Spot-to-Spot Stroke Line warm-up, then Speed Ladder zones 1–3 only.
    • Session 3: Speed Ladder full, focusing on identical pre-shot routine.
    • Session 4: Stop-Shot Ladder, then Speed Ladder in reverse.

Checkpoint · Baseline scores recorded for Speed Ladder and Stop-Shot Ladder.

  2. W2

    Repeatable speed

Reduce the spread of your results at each speed rather than chasing single good shots.

  3. W3

    Apply to position play

Use the speed scale to land the cue ball in defined zones after a pot.

  4. W4

Test, review, choose the next priority

Retest under the same conditions as Week 1 and compare honestly.

Progress checkpoints

  • — End of Week 1: baseline recorded
  • — End of Week 2: Speed Ladder cleared in ≤12 attempts
  • — End of Week 3: Tangent-Line Position Zone ≥14 points
  • — End of Week 4: retest completed and next priority chosen

Completion criteria

All 16 sessions logged and the Week 4 retest completed. Improvement is measured against your own baseline, not a fixed target.

30-Day Cue Ball Control: questions

Do I need to master draw and follow first?

You should be able to play a basic stop, follow and draw shot. If not, start with 7-Day Stroke Fundamentals.

How long is each session?

About 45 minutes, four times a week. If you can only train three times, keep the order and extend the programme to five or six weeks.

What if I don't hit a weekly checkpoint?

Repeat that week before moving on. The checkpoint matters more than the calendar.

Which programme comes next?

Position Play Foundations builds directly on the speed control you develop here.
