Break ball
What is a break ball in straight pool?
A break ball is the ball used to break open the next rack in straight pool (14.1), or more generally a ball used to send the cue ball into a cluster. It must be pottable while leaving the cue ball on line for the break-out.
In more detail
Choosing and preserving a break ball is central to long runs in straight pool. In 8-ball the idea is similar: plan a pottable ball near a cluster that lets you split it.
