Key ball

What is the key ball in 8-ball?

The key ball is the ball you play just before the 8-ball (or the final ball), chosen because it gives easy position on the 8. Picking it early simplifies the end of the run.

In more detail

The best key balls are close to the 8 and to a pocket, so a short, controllable shot gives a natural angle. Avoid using your key ball early just because it is easy.
