Playing the ghost
Also called: The ghost, Ghost drill
What does playing the ghost mean in pool?
Playing the ghost is a solo practice game: you break (or take ball in hand) and try to run the rack. If you miss, the 'ghost' wins that rack. It is an honest benchmark for 9-ball and 8-ball run-outs.
In more detail
Track your score against the ghost over many sessions. Start with ball in hand after the break if full racks are too hard, then remove the help as you improve.
