Open table
What does open table mean in 8-ball?
In 8-ball, the table is open after the break until a player legally pockets a called ball and chooses a group. While it is open you may hit a solid first to pot a stripe or vice versa; whether the 8 may be contacted first differs between rule sets.
In more detail
Choosing a group is a strategic decision: pick the group with fewer problem balls, not just the one with the easiest first shot.
People also ask
Can you hit the 8 first on an open table?
It depends on the rule set — some allow it without scoring a group ball, many league rules call it a foul. Pocketing the 8 before your group is cleared (other than on the break) loses, so confirm the rules before you play.
